New Jersey State ‘Tall Ship’ to Dock at Gardner’s Basin

August 1 - 12, 2013

The official New Jersey State Tall Ship, the A.J. Meerwald, is scheduled to dock at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City, N.J., from Thursday, August 1 through Sunday, August 11, 2013.  The ship will be available for educational tours, group bookings and fundraisers. Public tours and sails, including a pirate sail and a family sail, also will be scheduled. To reserve the A.J. About the A.J. Meerwald

            The A.J. Meerwald is a Delaware Bay Oyster Schooner, built in 1928 to meet the needs of New Jersey's oyster fishing industry, which, at the time, was the backbone of the region's economy and culture. The A. J. Meerwald was one of hundreds of schooners built along South Jersey's Delaware Bayshore before the decline of the shipbuilding industry that coincided with the Great Depression. The ship has been authentically restored and serves as a sailing classroom for the Bayshore Discovery Project.

            The Bayshore Discovery Project's mission is to motivate people to take care of the environment, the history and the culture of New Jersey's Bayshore region through education, preservation and example. Established in 1988, the organization has grown from a small group of conservationists who took on the task of restoring a dilapidated oyster schooner into a sailing classroom, and has become a multifaceted provider of education that serves more than 50,000 people each year through museum programs, special events, and a variety of additional shore-based programming.
